Bhabani Shankar Bhoi Nominated for Deputy Speaker in Odisha Assembly

Bhabani Shankar Bhoi of the BJP has filed his nomination for the post of Deputy Speaker in the Odisha Assembly. Accompanied by prominent party leaders, Bhoi, a twice-elected Talsara MLA, is set for the election, which will proceed on Wednesday if multiple candidates contest.

In a significant political move, BJP legislator Bhabani Shankar Bhoi filed his nomination papers for the post of Deputy Speaker in the Odisha Assembly on Tuesday.

He was accompanied by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Deputy Chief Ministers KV Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, among others. Bhoi, representing Talsara, has been elected to the Odisha Legislative Assembly twice, in 2019 and 2024.

The election for the Deputy Speaker's post is scheduled for Wednesday, provided there is more than one candidate in contention, according to an official. Previously, senior BJP leader Surama Padhy was elected as the Speaker of the assembly.

The current composition of the 147-member assembly includes 78 BJP MLAs, 51 from BJD, 14 from Congress, three independents, and one CPI(M) MLA.
