Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has arrived in China for crucial talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The high-level discussions aim to secure a 'fair peace' in Ukraine's war with Russia and address bilateral relations. Kuleba's visit is the first by such a high-ranking Ukrainian official since the full-scale invasion by Russia began in February 2022. Notably, China, the world's second-largest economy, has refrained from publicly condemning Russia's actions.

Kuleba announced that the talks would be 'extensive, detailed, substantive,' though he did not specify the schedule. His trip is set to continue until Thursday. He emphasized the need for direct dialogue between Kyiv and Beijing to avoid competing peace plans. The discussions come amid various peace initiatives and ahead of a significant U.S. election that may impact future aid to Ukraine.

Kyiv is advocating for a second international summit later this year to advance its vision for peace. This follows an initial summit in Switzerland attended by numerous global delegations but not by Russia or China. Ukraine has also expressed a desire for greater Chinese involvement in ending the conflict. While China maintains a 'no limits' partnership with Russia, it asserts that its relationship is based on non-alliance principles.
