France Secures Conditional Hosting of 2030 Winter Games
France was conditionally chosen to host the 2030 Winter Games, pending the delivery of key financial guarantees by early 2025. President Emmanuel Macron assured full national commitment to the candidacy. The IOC requires state and regional financial assurances before finalizing France as the host.
France has been conditionally selected to host the 2030 Winter Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Wednesday. However, the final decision is contingent upon France delivering vital financial guarantees in the upcoming months. The French Alps bid has been favored since June, but political uncertainties, including elections and a caretaker government, have delayed the necessary financial commitments.
The French government must secure the guarantees signed by the prime minister by October 1 and obtain parliamentary ratification by March 1, 2025, according to the IOC. French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the IOC session, easing concerns and expressing his firm support for the bid. 'I confirm the full commitment of the French nation, and assure you that I will ask the next prime minister to include not only this guarantee but also an Olympic Law in the priorities of the new government,' said Macron.
The IOC received multiple assurances regarding the required financial guarantees from the French state and involved regions, Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur. Despite the strong support, the IOC stated that it would withhold the final host city contract until all guarantees were met. The decision means France is set to host the Winter Games six years after the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. France has previously hosted the Winter Games in Chamonix (1924), Grenoble (1968), and Albertville (1992).
