Dr Neeraj Patil, a prominent NRI and former Mayor of the London Borough of Lambeth, has been appointed to the Labour Party's National Executive Committee (NEC), the party's top decision-making body.
The confirmation came from General Secretary David Evans last week. The NEC is responsible for governing the Labour Party, setting its strategic direction and policy development. It comprises 39 members, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer, trade union representatives, MPs, and party members.
Patil, originally from Kalburgi, Karnataka, completed his initial education in India and post-graduate studies at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. With 28 years of service in the NHS as a consultant in Accident and Emergency Medicine, Patil has been an active member of the Labour Party for two decades. He has served twice on the National Policy Forum and eight years on the Lambeth Council, where he played a key role in installing the Basaveshwara statue in 2015.
