Israel Military Probes Detainee Abuse amid Gaza Conflict
Israel's military has launched an investigation into alleged abuse of a Palestinian detainee during the Gaza war. The inquiry, which has sparked protests and political backlash, follows accusations of significant mistreatment. Military chiefs have defended the investigation, emphasizing the importance of upholding military honor and security.
Israel's military has initiated an investigation into suspected abuse of a Palestinian detainee held during the Gaza war, the army disclosed on Monday, amidst a storm of right-wing protests and political objections. The military stated that an inquiry was ordered by the Advocate General following substantial abuse claims but did not provide further details.
According to Army Radio, military police visited the Sde Teiman detention site where approximately 10 reserve soldiers are suspected of mistreating a prisoner associated with the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas. Human rights organizations, including the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI), have reported severe abuse at the camp, a defunct military base in the Negev desert set to be decommissioned. The military had earlier announced investigations into abuse allegations.
As military police arrived, civilian protesters, including far-right MPs, rallied outside, condemning the investigation of soldiers fulfilling their duties. Some demonstrators attempted to breach the base. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant criticized the break-in attempt.
Military Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi condemned the protests and defended the investigation for preserving Israel Defense Forces’ (IDF) honor. “We are in the midst of a war, and actions of this type endanger state security,” Halevi said, emphasizing that such probes protect soldiers and uphold IDF values.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a key figure in Netanyahu's nationalist-religious coalition and a frequent army command critic, posted a video on social media platform X asserting that soldiers should be revered as heroes, not criminals. Reports of detainee mistreatment have increased global scrutiny of Israel's Gaza war conduct, which is nearing its 11th month. In May, the U.S. State Department expressed concerns over Israeli treatment of Palestinian detainees.
