Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) has given preliminary approval to an agreement supporting Spain's Socialists in forming a regional government in Catalonia, according to state broadcaster TVE.

The decision awaits final confirmation from party militants through an internal vote.

The Socialists, led locally by Salvador Illa, require ERC's support to secure a majority in Catalonia's 135-seat chamber after winning the most votes but falling short of a majority in May's regional election.
