Vice President Kamala Harris: The Complex Challenge of Addressing Migration

WASHINGTON, July 30 - Vice President Kamala Harris, assigned to address the root causes of Central American migration as illegal border crossings surged in 2021, was immediately confronted with the enormity of the task.

The region is plagued by corruption and economic inequality, elements driving migration. Furthermore, Harris did not control the border. 'She was given a very hard, difficult, convoluted portfolio,' commented U.S. Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee and co-author of a bipartisan border security bill introduced earlier this year.

Donald Trump, now a Republican presidential candidate, has ramped up his attacks on Harris, calling her a failed 'border czar.' Despite her efforts, approximately 7 million migrants have been arrested for illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border under Biden's administration. However, the reality of Harris's record is much more nuanced, according to interviews with Biden officials and experts tracking the issue.
