Assam CM Raises Alarm Over Escalating Rohingya Influx

Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, highlighted the growing issue of Rohingya infiltration from the India-Bangladesh border. Sarma criticized states like West Bengal and Jharkhand for their leniency and praised Assam and Tripura for taking strong measures. He stressed that Assam is no longer a sanctuary for Rohingyas due to firm policies.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday warned about the rising trend of Rohingya infiltration into India, describing it as a significant demographic threat.

'Rohingyas are entering India via the India-Bangladesh border, affecting many states with demographic challenges,' Sarma stated during a press conference.

Sarma pointed out that while Assam is trying to secure its part of the border, many stretches remain porous. He criticized the West Bengal and Jharkhand governments for their inaction against the infiltrators.

'West Bengal's Chief Minister even announced plans to shelter migrants from Bangladesh, which hasn't been approved by the neighboring country’s government,' he claimed.

According to Sarma, Assam and Tripura have taken stringent measures, resulting in multiple arrests of Rohingya infiltrators by the police. 'Assam is no longer a safe haven for Rohingyas; our firm policies ensure better security compared to West Bengal and Jharkhand,' he asserted.
