Sri Lanka's annual inflation jumped to 2.4% in July from 1.7% in June, the government statistics office reported on Wednesday. This uptick, attributed to rising costs in transport, food, and education, comes as the country prepares for crucial presidential elections on September 21.
The island nation, grappling with an economic crisis, saw inflation peak at 70% in mid-2022. As recovery efforts continue, the Central Bank aims to stabilize overall inflation at 5% in 2024. Despite this, the IMF-related recovery program faces criticism from the opposition, who promise relief from high utility costs and taxes during their campaign.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, 57, has entered the race, with his nomination filed on Wednesday. Other candidates, including President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Justice Minister Wijeyedasa Rajapakshe, have also declared their candidacies, setting the stage for a highly contested election.
