At the National Association of Black Journalists' annual convention, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump ignited controversy by questioning the racial identity of his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris. Trump's comments on whether Harris is 'Indian or Black' drew jeers from the audience of about 1,000 people.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre condemned the remarks, labeling them 'repulsive' and 'insulting.' Harris, the first Black and the first Asian American U.S. vice president, has consistently identified as both Black and South Asian American.

The controversy comes amid a series of sexist and racist attacks against Harris, exacerbated by misinformation on social media. Trump’s appearance at the convention, his first, received backlash, leading a co-chair to resign in protest. Despite ongoing efforts to court Black voters, Trump's latest poll numbers show a tight race against Harris.
