Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian paid their respects over the coffins of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and his bodyguard, in a ceremony that has heightened regional tensions.
Haniyeh, in Tehran for Pezeshkian's inauguration, was killed in an Israeli airstrike, intensifying the potential for broader conflict. State television broadcasted the funeral procession, which saw the coffins moved through Tehran amid flower-throwing mourners.
The assassination follows Israel's vow to target Hamas leaders post the group's Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel. International observers, including U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, urge restraint to avoid further escalation.
