Samajwadi Party MLAs brought the Uttar Pradesh Assembly to a standstill on Thursday by protesting against the demolition of a platform intended for the installation of a statue of former Cabinet Minister Hari Shankar Tiwari in Gorakhpur.
The commotion began as soon as the House convened, with SP leader Kamal Akhtar raising the issue.
Leader of Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey highlighted that the platform was constructed after obtaining permission from the district magistrate upon a request from the village head.
The SP members stormed the well of the House, raising slogans in protest.
Speaker Satish Mahana stated that he couldn't seek a government reply without prior notice on the issue.
Despite the SP's persistent demands, Mahana assured that he would request the government to investigate the matter.
Earlier, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav had taken to social media to condemn the demolition.
Yadav criticized the BJP government for disrespecting the legacy of Tiwari, a prominent political figure and Brahmin leader, whose statue was to be installed on August 5, his birth anniversary.
