West Bengal minister Firhad Hakim on Thursday claimed that his remarks at a religious event were 'misinterpreted' and he had no intention to hurt anyone, amid protests by the opposition BJP.
In the assembly, Hakim, serving as the state's urban development minister and also Kolkata's mayor, emphasized his commitment to secularism. He pointed out his regular involvement in organizing Durga Puja and Kali Puja ceremonies despite being a Muslim.
BJP MLAs staged walkouts whenever Hakim attempted to speak, criticizing his comments from the All India Quran Competition last month. He decried the politicization of his remarks and reaffirmed his respect for all religions.
