In a significant show of solidarity, the opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala has announced that all its MLAs will contribute one month's salary to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF) to assist in rebuilding Wayanad, which was devastated by recent landslides.
Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan emphasized that the UDF will partake in all rehabilitation efforts and aim to restore normalcy for the survivors. Notably, Congress has pledged to build 100 houses, and the Indian Union Muslim League, a crucial ally, has also proposed rehabilitation packages.
The move comes after a similar initiative from the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF). Despite internal disagreements within Congress on contributing to the CMDRF, Satheesan underlined the importance of using both traditional knowledge and modern technology to set up an early warning system and policy changes to mitigate future disasters.
