Kennedy claimed the video, posted on social media platform X, was an attempt to preempt a story by the New Yorker. He recounted how he found the bear after a vehicle collision and, before catching a flight, decided to leave it in the park with a bicycle staged to look like an accident.

The Kennedy campaign did not provide additional comments. In 2014, a black bear cub's body was found in Central Park, spurring a criminal investigation. Reuters previously reported foul play was suspected.
