West Bengal Correctional Services Minister Akhil Giri has tendered his resignation amid mounting controversy and internal party pressure. This follows an incident where Giri was filmed threatening a female forest department official.

The Trinamool Congress leadership had demanded his resignation and an apology to the official, but Giri stated he would only apologize to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Speaking to reporters, Giri attributed his outburst to frustration with the alleged suffering inflicted on locals by the forest department.

Giri, who has been a TMC MLA since 1998, accused forest officials of accepting bribes from small businessmen to set up shops on department land. He expressed his intention to explain the situation in detail to the Chief Minister and confirmed he would continue his political career with TMC until his term ends in 2026.
