Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled the country, multiple sources confirmed, in the wake of some of the most severe violence the nation has seen since its inception over fifty years ago.

In a televised address, Army chief General Waker-Us-Zaman announced that Hasina, 76, had vacated her position and an interim government would be established. She reportedly left in a military helicopter with her sister, heading towards the eastern Indian state of West Bengal or the northeastern state of Tripura.

Reactions in Dhaka were immediate, with thousands of jubilant individuals flooding the streets, storming the Prime Minister's residence, and even vandalizing a statue of Hasina's father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The unrest, driven by student-led protests demanding an end to a contentious job quota system, culminated in Hasina's ouster after escalating violence claimed numerous lives.
