Iran Calls for Punitive Action Against Israel Amid Regional Tensions
Iran indicates its intent to penalize Israel to stave off regional instability following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Iran's Foreign Ministry has called for international support in punishing Israel, criticizing the United States for its continued backing of Israel. An Organisation of Islamic Cooperation emergency meeting is scheduled.
Iran has declared its intention to take punitive measures against Israel to prevent further destabilization in the region, following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week, said a foreign ministry spokesperson on Monday.
"Iran seeks stability but believes punishment of Israel is necessary to deter further aggressions," stated Nasser Kanaani, who also criticized the United States for its continued support of Israel. The international community has thus far failed to uphold regional stability and should back the punishment of the aggressor, he added.
Iran's foreign ministry convened a meeting with ambassadors and diplomatic heads in Tehran to reiterate its stance. An emergency session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation is slated for Wednesday at Iran's request to discuss the response to Haniyeh's killing.
Tehran and Iran-aligned groups like Hamas and Hezbollah accuse Israel of assassinating Haniyeh on July 31. This marks another killing of a senior Hamas figure amidst the ongoing Gaza conflict with Israel nearing its 11th month, although Israeli officials have not claimed responsibility.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps' top Commander Hossein Salami reiterated on Monday that Israel would face repercussions in due course.
