Crackdown in Venezuela: Operation Knock-Knock Sparks Fear
Venezuelan security forces are targeting protesters of the disputed election in an operation named 'knock-knock.' Advocacy groups report intensified efforts to capture protesters, including minors, without legal representation and sometimes charging them with terrorism. President Maduro supports the operation, labeling the protesters as 'fascist criminals.'
Venezuelan security forces are intensifying their efforts to apprehend protesters involved in violent crimes during recent demonstrations over the disputed election. This operation, informally called 'knock-knock,' has left many protesters in fear, according to advocacy groups.
Three major advocacy groups informed Reuters that the security forces are particularly targeting minors and detaining them without providing legal representation. Some protesters have even been charged with terrorism. President Nicolas Maduro has praised 'knock-knock' as a necessary measure to address what he describes as 'fascist criminals' responsible for protest violence.
Foro Penal's Vice President, Gonzalo Himiob, explained that the name 'knock-knock' refers to early morning raids by security forces. The disputed election results have led to widespread protests, with the opposition claiming their candidate Edmundo Gonzalez won, contrary to the official results favoring Maduro. Various international entities have taken sides, adding to the tension in the country.
