India is closely monitoring the unfolding crisis in Bangladesh after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned amid escalating protests and violence. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar shared that India remains in touch with Dhaka's authorities, ensuring the safety of minority communities and Indian nationals residing there. He assured that India has also reached out to the new administration in Bangladesh regarding the well-being of the over 10,000 Indians currently in the country.
Jaishankar informed Parliament that Hasina sought India's approval on short notice to come to India temporarily. Despite considering asylum in the UK, Hasina is now exploring options like the UAE, US, and several other countries. Jaishankar emphasized India's longstanding close ties with Bangladesh and highlighted shared concerns across the political spectrum over the recent unrest.
Sheikh Hasina, who led Bangladesh for 15 years, stepped down amid a mass protest movement initially triggered by dissatisfaction with a job quota scheme, which evolved into demands for her resignation. The Indian government continues to advocate for restraint and dialogue to stabilize the situation and is working to ensure the security of its missions and nationals in Bangladesh.
