Bangladesh in Turmoil: President Dissolves Parliament Amid Violent Protests

Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved Parliament on Tuesday, clearing the path for fresh elections. This move came a day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India following weeks of violent anti-government protests.

The army has now taken charge, with the death toll from the unrest rising to 440. Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus, aged 84, has agreed to head the interim government. Violent attacks on Hindu temples and leaders were reported after Hasina fled.

In a decisive move, President Shahabuddin met with key student protest leaders at Bangabhaban to discuss the interim government structure. As a result, Bangladesh is poised for new elections amid considerable political and social turmoil.
