Comoros President Grants Son Sweeping Political Powers Sparking Succession Speculations
Comoros President Azali Assoumani has bestowed extensive powers upon his son, Nour El Fath, to intervene in government decision-making processes. This move has raised concerns among opposition figures who speculate it's a strategy to prepare his son as his successor. Assoumani has not addressed these allegations.
Comoros President Azali Assoumani has vested significant new powers in his son, Nour El Fath, effectively allowing him to influence all stages of government decision-making. This development came after El Fath was appointed to coordinate government affairs last month.
The decision intensified suspicions among Assoumani's opponents that he aims to position his son as his successor when his term concludes in 2029. Despite growing allegations, Assoumani has remained silent on the matter.
El Fath, who has previously served as a senior economic adviser and later as the secretary general of the government, now holds the authority to evaluate ministers and engage in the implementation of governmental decisions, as per a presidential decree. Government spokesperson Fatima Hamada stated the decree clarifies El Fath's official duties.
