Former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, renowned for his commitment to Communist ideology and pragmatic approach toward industrialising the state, died at 80 at his residence on Thursday.

A stalwart of CPI(M), Bhattacharjee's efforts in transforming Bengal earned him both admiration and criticism. His industrialisation drive, despite noble intentions, resulted in the fall of the Left Front government after an uninterrupted 34-year rule. He leaves behind his wife Meera and son Suchetan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the condolences, lauding Bhattacharjee as a dedicated political figure. Rahul Gandhi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also highlighted his extensive public service and contributions to the state. The CPI(M) marked the end of a key chapter in West Bengal's communist movement.
