Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has assumed leadership of an interim government in Bangladesh, following the abrupt resignation of Sheikh Hasina. The new administration aims to restore order, ensure citizen safety, and hold fair elections. The advisory council includes various prominent figures from different sectors, though concerns about balance remain.
Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has taken the helm of an interim government in Bangladesh, succeeding Sheikh Hasina, who resigned amid deadly protests. The new government faces the critical task of restoring order, ensuring citizen safety, and facilitating a fair election to enable a democratic transition.
The advisory council, comprising activists, scholars, and former government officials, aims to eliminate oppression and the prevailing culture of fear. Dhaka University's Serajul Islam Choudhury emphasized the need to restore order, while eminent jurist Kamal Hossain highlighted the overwhelming public support for the change and the need for meaningful reforms.
However, concerns have been raised about the lack of balance in political representation within the council. Barrister Sara Hossain called for institutional reforms and truth-telling about past events, while Dhaka University's Samina Luthfa noted the inclusion of student leaders as a positive step but questioned the adequacy of minority and women's representation. The interim government's immediate priorities, she said, should be citizen safety, justice, economy, and law and order.
