Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Saturday raised alarm over the influx of people from Bangladesh, citing unrest in the neighboring country as a cause for concern. In response, his government has imposed a night curfew in select districts to curb infiltration.
"I am in touch with the external affairs ministry. As for our security, we have imposed night curfew in Pherzawl and Jiribam districts to check the influx," Singh informed the media.
The unrest in Bangladesh, which erupted following the fall of the Hasina government, has resulted in the deaths of over 560 people since mid-July. The Chief Minister was addressing a function for the Centre's 'Har Ghar Tiranga' initiative, an effort to instill nationalism.
Singh urged all legislators to engage with relief camp inmates on Independence Day to address their grievances. The 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to encourage citizens to display the national flag at their homes ahead of Independence Day on August 15.
