Firebrand Democratic U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar faces a significant challenge from within her own party on Tuesday, as former Minneapolis city councilor Don Samuels seeks to unset her. This comes after two fellow Squad members lost their primaries earlier this year.

The Minnesota lawmaker, who became a prominent figure in 2018, is facing a primary rematch with Samuels, who narrowly lost to her in 2022. The winner is expected to easily win the November 5 election, important for determining control of Congress as Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump vie for the presidency.

Omar's fellow Squad members, Representatives Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush, recently lost their party primaries, partly due to the influence of pro-Israel fundraising group AIPAC. A shift in the party away from progressive causes has also proven challenging for Omar. Despite the hurdles, Omar has fundraised aggressively, amassing $6.8 million, far outstripping Samuels' $1.4 million.
