Democratic U.S. Representative Steny Hoyer suffered a mild stroke on Sunday, his office announced on Tuesday. Despite the health scare, the 85-year-old former House majority leader is expected to resume his normal schedule next week, with no lingering symptoms.

Hoyer has been a significant figure in Congress since his first election in 1981, representing Maryland's 5th district. He served as the House majority leader under Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi from 2007-2011 and again from 2019-2022. Hoyer also served as the minority whip during Republican control of the House in the intervening years.

Having retired from leadership along with Pelosi in 2023, Hoyer is currently running for reelection in November's general election. The Republicans currently hold a 220-212 majority in the House.
