Omar defeated former Minneapolis city council member Don Samuels in Minnesota's 5th District Democratic primary.

As reported by the Associated Press and NBC News, Omar was leading Samuels 56.2%-42.9% with 216 of 217 precincts reporting results. Her substantial campaign fundraising, amounting to $6.8 million since the 2022 election, significantly outpaced Samuels' $1.4 million and likely contributed to her lead.

Amid the broader context of the Democratic Party shifting away from some of its far-left policies, Omar, a Somali refugee, continues to champion progressive causes and has vowed to support her district's large immigrant population.
