In an escalating controversy, Gujarat Congress leaders, notably state unit working president Rutvik Makwana, found themselves at the center of a storm related to photos of Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar on T-shirts worn by students during a Tiranga Yatra in Surendranagar district.
The altercation with the principal and teachers of a government-run primary school led to police filing an FIR against five Congress leaders, including Makwana and Seva Dal national convener Lalji Desai. Charges include actions that could jeopardize Indian unity and promote enmity.
The incident occurred in Sangani village during a tricolour march on the eve of Independence Day. The FIR cited objections to Savarkar’s photos on T-shirts worn by pupils, escalating into heated arguments and ultimately leading to the registration of multiple charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
