On Monday, BJP National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to resign, accusing her administration of 'threatening' critics and summoning doctors over the Kolkata rape and murder investigation. Poonawalla questioned when Banerjee would step down, criticizing her government for intimidating those who raise concerns about the case. 'The police are summoning doctors,' he stated while speaking to ANI.
Poonawalla's remarks followed the summoning of doctors and leaders, including TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, by Kolkata Police for allegedly 'spreading misinformation' about the incident. 'When their leaders raise concerns, they are being summoned. MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy has been summoned by Kolkata Police for demanding an investigation. The government is using institutional means to destroy evidence,' Poonawalla added.
'The Calcutta High Court has already expressed displeasure with the Bengal government over this case. Now, the Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance. Mamata Banerjee has no right to stay as Chief Minister anymore,' Poonawalla said. His comments came a day after TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy questioned Kolkata Police's inquiry into the case in a post on X.
Kolkata Police has summoned the Head of the Chest Department at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for questioning related to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor on August 9. Protests and public outrage have followed the discovery of the crime. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has instructed the police to arrest the accused promptly and mentioned that if the case remains unsolved by Sunday, it will be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
