Putin Ally Claims U.S. Behind Telegram CEO's Arrest
A senior Russian ally accused the U.S. of orchestrating the arrest of Pavel Durov, Telegram's CEO, in France. Durov faces charges related to child pornography, drug trafficking, and fraud. The situation underscores the platform's significance in Ukraine's war, where it serves as a key communication tool.
A senior ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed on Tuesday that the United States played a role in the arrest of Pavel Durov, founder and CEO of Telegram. The allegation arose after Durov was detained in France over charges including child pornography, drug trafficking, and fraudulent transactions, according to French prosecutors.
Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of Russia's State Duma, asserted that the U.S. is attempting to control Telegram, a platform crucial for communication about the Ukraine war. Volodin emphasized that the platform's independence is particularly significant ahead of the U.S. presidential election.
The White House has offered no comment on the arrest, while French President Emmanuel Macron stated it was not politically motivated. The Kremlin noted it had not received official accusations. Telegram, with its nearly 1 billion users, serves as a vital source of unfiltered information, especially concerning the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
