Congress MP from Nanded, Maharashtra, Vasant Chavan, was cremated in his hometown, Naigaon, on Tuesday morning, amidst a gathering of supporters and party leaders.
Chavan, aged 69, passed away at a private hospital in Hyderabad on Monday morning, following a prolonged illness.
Chavan's supporters raised slogans as his body was placed on the funeral pyre. Nanded district guardian minister, Girish Mahajan, remarked on Chavan's strong connection with the people.
In 2024, Chavan first entered the Lok Sabha by defeating BJP's Pratap Patil Chikhlikar from the Nanded constituency, despite battling health problems and party desertions, including that of former CM Ashok Chavan to BJP.
Chavan's electoral victory was remarkable, considering he overcame significant personal and organizational challenges, particularly following Ashok Chavan's defection, which had initially weakened Congress's hold in Nanded.
