Former Taipei Mayor and head of the Taiwan People's Party, Ko Wen-je, was released on Monday after his arrest over a major property development graft probe was deemed unsupported by evidence.
Ko, who served as mayor from 2014 to 2022, maintains his innocence and questioned the necessity of the raid by prosecutors. Taipei prosecutors intend to appeal the court's decision.
In addition, Ko's campaign finances are under scrutiny, leading him to step down temporarily as party chairman. This scandal has impacted his political standing ahead of his anticipated 2028 presidential run.
