Trump's Sentencing Delayed Until After Election
A New York judge delayed former President Donald Trump's sentencing related to hush money paid to a porn star until after the Nov. 5 election. The judge cited the complexities involved and the potential appeals related to presidential immunity. The new sentencing date is set for Nov. 26.
A New York judge has postponed the sentencing of former President Donald Trump on charges regarding hush money payments to a porn star until after the Nov. 5 election. Originally set for Sept. 18, the sentencing will now take place on Nov. 26, unless the case is dismissed beforehand.
Judge Juan Merchan highlighted the complexities of the case, describing it as unique in the nation's history. He noted that the timing adds further complications, making a pre-election sentencing challenging to execute. Trump's legal team will also have the opportunity to appeal a ruling on presidential immunity before the new sentencing date.
The Manhattan District Attorney's office, led by Alvin Bragg, did not oppose Trump's request to delay sentencing. They emphasized the significant security and logistical planning required for Trump's court appearances, stating that a delay could be disruptive. Trump's trial had already brought a heavy police presence to lower Manhattan.
