Alberto Fujimori, whose decade-long presidency started as a beacon of hope for Peru’s economy and security but concluded in a scandal of autocratic rule, passed away at 86 in Lima. His death was confirmed by his daughter Keiko Fujimori on Wednesday.
Fujimori had been pardoned in December from his convictions for corruption and the murders of 25 individuals. In July, his daughter announced that he was planning a fourth presidential run in 2026.
Emerging from obscurity, the former university president and mathematics professor won Peru's 1990 elections. He restored an economy plagued by inflation and defeated Shining Path rebels. However, his governance faced severe backlash, leading to a 25-year prison sentence in 2009. Despite imprisonment, Fujimori aspired for political comeback, even while uncertain about overcoming legal obstacles.
