Kamal Haasan Criticizes 'One Nation, One Election' Proposal

Speaking at a party meet, he discussed the potential dangers of simultaneous elections and voiced concerns on other political issues. Kamal Haasan, the acclaimed actor and founder of the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), has voiced his concerns over the 'One Nation, One Election' proposal, calling it both dangerous and flawed. Speaking at a party meeting on Saturday, Haasan highlighted the potential dangers of simultaneous elections, including the risk of dictatorship and the erosion of democratic freedoms.

Without naming any specific political parties or leaders, Haasan suggested that if simultaneous elections had been held in 2014 or 2015, it would have resulted in a complete sweep, leading to a dominance of a single leader. He likened this scenario to a more virulent disease than Coronavirus, a situation India has narrowly escaped.

During his address, Haasan also raised concerns about the potential reduction in Parliamentary seats for Tamil Nadu due to a proposed delimitation process. He emphasized the importance of equitable distribution of funds and representation. Haasan's party has joined the DMK alliance for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and is preparing for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election.
