Sri Lanka Set for Second Preference Count in Presidential Election

The Election Commission of Sri Lanka has announced a second preference count after no candidate secured over 50% of the votes in the presidential election. Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Sajith Premadasa lead but need additional preference votes to declare a winner.

The Election Commission of Sri Lanka has announced a second preference count as no presidential candidate secured the necessary 50% of votes to win.

Commission Chairman R M A L Rathnayake reported that leading candidates Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Sajith Premadasa received the most votes in the initial tally.

However, with neither candidate achieving the majority, the cumulative preference votes will be counted to declare the new president.
