Moldova's Presidential Election: A Crucial Test for EU Aspirations

A record number of 11 candidates have been cleared to contest Moldova's presidential election next month, officials announced on Tuesday. Among them is incumbent Maia Sandu, who frames the election as pivotal in her drive to join the European Union.

Sandu is leading the polls against her main 10 opponents. These challengers include dismissed prosecutor general Alexander Stoianoglo, supported by pro-Russian opposition parties, and Renato Usatii, who seeks balanced relations with both Western and Russian interests.

The election, set for October 20, will coincide with a referendum on constitutional changes to facilitate Moldova's bid for EU membership. This referendum has sparked controversy, with opposition Socialists accusing Sandu of leveraging it to secure a second term. Only two out of 15 parties in the referendum campaign oppose the pro-EU trajectory.

Parts of Russian drones have reportedly landed in Moldova, a country bordered by Ukraine and Romania. Western countries, including the United States, Britain, and Canada, have accused Russia of attempting to influence the election and incite unrest if a pro-Moscow candidate is defeated.

Recent polling data from Idata indicates Sandu leads with 26.8% support, followed by Usatii with 12.7%, and Stoianoglo with 11.2%. Support for EU membership stands at 56% among decided voters, while 34% are opposed.

Other candidates in the race include two former prime ministers, a former deputy prime minister, a former head of the pro-Russian Gagauzia region, and a notable journalist.
