The Russian parliament has taken its first step in passing legislation that would prevent citizens from countries allowing gender reassignment from adopting Russian children. This measure is seen as crucial for upholding the country's 'traditional values.'

Last year, Russia introduced a ban on gender changes, reinforcing a crackdown on LGBT rights. This addition comes as President Vladimir Putin portrays the nation as a defender of traditional values against a 'morally decadent' West. The bill passed its first reading in the State Duma with an overwhelming 397-1 vote, indicating strong governmental support.

'This decision aims to protect childhood and traditional values,' stated Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of the Duma and a Putin ally. He emphasized the need to shield Russian children from potential dangers in foreign adoptee countries where gender reassignment is legal. Co-author Vasily Piskarev alleged that such adoptees risk forced gender changes and sexual exploitation in the West. Notably, adoptions by U.S. citizens were banned in 2012, and adoptions by foreign nationals have drastically decreased amid Russia's ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
