Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida resigned along with his Cabinet on Tuesday, clearing the path for Shigeru Ishiba to most likely become the new Prime Minister.
Kishida, who began his tenure in 2021, leaves office amidst ongoing scandals that plagued his administration. Ishiba is expected to call a parliamentary election for Oct. 27 once he formally takes office later today. 'I believe it is important to have the new administration receive the public's judgment as soon as possible,' Ishiba stated.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi, Kishida’s close ally, emphasized the global expectation for Japan's diplomatic role despite international tensions, including Russia’s war in Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East. Hayashi expressed hopes for an active and powerful diplomatic approach under the new administration.
