In a diplomatic breakthrough, Belarus has released three individuals who had been detained for more than three years, including an American citizen and journalist Andrey Kuznechyk, a move confirmed by U.S. officials this Wednesday.
The American's identity and the charges were not disclosed by the White House, but Kuznechyk's release comes after his 2021 arrest during a crackdown on independent media. Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, where Kuznechyk worked, expressed joy at his return, praising figures such as President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for their roles in the negotiated release.
Kuznechyk was reportedly charged with being part of an extremist organization, however, the U.S. government and press freedom groups classified him as a political prisoner. His release aligns with recent diplomatic activities, including a U.S.-Russia prisoner swap announced by the White House.
