Turkish Government's Crackdown on Opposition Mayors Sparks Controversy

Turkey has removed pro-Kurdish mayor Abdullah Zeydan over recent terrorism-related convictions, appointing a state official in his place. This development follows similar removals of other opposition mayors, sparking criticism from the European Parliament and assertions of political interference, all amidst talks with the jailed PKK leader to end a decades-long conflict.

In a controversial move, Turkey's government has dismissed Abdullah Zeydan, pro-Kurdish mayor of Van province, citing a terrorism-related conviction. A state official has replaced him, following similar dismissals of eight other DEM and CHP mayors since the March 2024 elections.

The Democratic Regions Party (DEM) criticized the decision, calling it an affront to democratic will, while the European Parliament condemned it as disrespect for the rule of law. Charges have sparked accusations of governmental interference aimed at stifling dissent, though Turkish authorities maintain the judiciary's independence.

This political upheaval coincides with discussions involving Abdullah Ocalan, jailed PKK leader, in efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict between the PKK and the state, which has spanned four decades.
