Brazil to Host Transformative BRICS Summit in Rio

The BRICS summit, a gathering of developing economies, will occur in Rio de Janeiro on July 6-7, focusing on global governance reform and South-South cooperation. Brazil, which chairs the bloc until 2025, seeks to enhance cooperation among member countries. Recent expansions include UAE, Iran, and a new 'partner country' designation.

The Brazilian government confirmed that the next BRICS summit is scheduled for July 6-7 in Rio de Janeiro. As the chair of the bloc until 2025, Brazil aims to steer discussions towards global governance reform and increased cooperation among Global South nations.

First formed in 2009, BRICS saw South Africa join a year later, expanding its influence as a counterbalance to the Group of Seven. Recent expansions include the inclusion of Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. Saudi Arabia has been invited, while Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Malaysia have applied for membership.

The upcoming summit will address critical issues like development and alternative payment systems, a necessity highlighted by threats from President Trump over tariffs. Indonesia, newly added, and Nigeria, designated as a 'partner country,' are also joining the talks to shape collaborative strategies for the future.
