Uttarakhand Implements UCC to Regulate Live-In Relationships

Uttarakhand has initiated the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) aimed at regulating live-in relationships to prevent abuse and violence. Spearheaded by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, this move seeks to provide a structured framework for registering live-in partnerships and marks a significant step towards enforcing social justice and equality.

In a significant move towards social reform, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced the state's adoption of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), underlining its role in regulating live-in relationships. The state aims to curb violence and abuse within these partnerships by mandating registration and administrative notification.

The Chief Minister's Office posted on X, stating that couples in live-in relationships will be obligated to inform both the administration and their families. This measure aims to deter violence without infringing on personal privacy. CM Dhami emphasized the significance of this provision, referencing the infamous Shraddha Walkar murder case as a cautionary tale.

Uttarakhand's pioneering adoption of the UCC is not without controversy, as it excludes Scheduled Tribes and certain protected communities. Despite opposition, CM Dhami defended the move as a balance between individual rights and public welfare, aligning with constitutional principles and promoting gender equality in personal laws.
