Hungary's Decisive Role in Ukraine's EU Ambitions

In a striking escalation of Hungary's stance towards Ukraine, Prime Minister Viktor Orban has proclaimed that Hungary will have the decisive say in Ukraine's potential accession to the European Union. Speaking at a State of the Nation address in Budapest, Orban described Ukraine as a buffer zone between Russia and NATO, predicting it will continue in this role post-conflict, despite aspirations to join the Western alliance.

Orban, known as Russia's closest ally in the EU, reiterated that Hungary stands firm against Ukraine's EU membership, arguing it would harm Hungarian farmers and the national economy. His position challenges unanimity required among EU leaders for new memberships and manifests in Hungary's opposition to EU sanctions against Russia, despite ultimately supporting them.

In parallel, Orban has targeted civil society, promising legal actions against NGOs and rights groups benefiting from USAID funding, and suggested constitutional changes restricting LGBTQ+ rights. He has openly admonished the annual LGBTQ+ Pride parade in Budapest, highlighting his government's continuously adversarial stance towards certain aspects of civil liberties.
