A Central team engaged in talks with protesting farmers on Saturday to address demands for a legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops. This meeting, attended by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and other officials, is part of ongoing efforts to mediate between the government and farmers advocating for MSP assurances.
The talks focused on farmers' contentions that a legal MSP guarantee could be assured with an annual budget of Rs 25,000-30,000 crore. Union ministers and farmer representatives debated data related to crop purchases, aiming to reconcile discrepancies between farmers' claims and governmental records. Further consultation with experts is planned before the next discussion on March 19 in Chandigarh.
Farmers' leaders in the meeting asserted that legal MSP guarantees would stabilize farmers' incomes and potentially alleviate farmer suicides by providing a secure income base. Alongside MSP, demands included debt waivers and changes in agricultural policies. Despite differing viewpoints, dialogue between both parties will continue in pursuit of a resolution to these pressing agricultural issues.
