In a recent statement, French President Emmanuel Macron highlighted the dual importance of Turkey's cooperation in European security and its commitment to democratic values. Speaking on Thursday, the French leader expressed regret over what he termed as 'systematic' attacks on freedoms by Turkey.
Macron underscored the mutual necessity for collaboration, stating, 'Turkey needs Europe, and Europe needs Turkey.' However, he stressed that this partnership requires Turkey to uphold its commitments to democracy and security.
The remarks follow Turkey's strong dismissal of global criticism over the arrest of Istanbul's Mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, with Turkish authorities detaining nearly 1,900 people protesting in support of the embattled mayor.
