Taiwan's VE Day Commemoration: A Stand Against Authoritarianism

Taiwan celebrated the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, emphasizing the current threats posed by China. This coincided with Xi Jinping's presence in Russia during Victory Day as Moscow pursued its campaign in Ukraine. President Lai Ching-te highlighted the lessons of history: 'Peace is priceless, and war has no winners.' He warned against military aggression, noting it leads only to slaughter and inequality.

Lai further elaborated on the challenges Taiwan faces from China's authoritarianism. He mentioned sabotage of undersea cables crucial for cybersecurity and external interference in elections via misinformation. These actions test Taiwan's democratic markets and international rules.

This commemoration is part of Taiwan's strategic diplomatic push to strengthen ties with global democracies. Despite no formal relations, Taiwan seeks partnerships, with former President Tsai Ing-wen visiting Lithuania and Denmark and Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung traveling to Texas. Lai warned of the risks of complacency towards aggression, a sentiment echoed as Xi and Putin discussed deeper bilateral cooperation amidst ongoing tensions.
