In a devastating attack near the tri-state border of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, 34 soldiers were killed and 14 injured, according to Niger's defence ministry. The assailants, reportedly in eight vehicles and over 200 motorbikes, struck Thursday morning in Banibangou.

Nigerian forces responded by neutralizing dozens of attackers identified as 'terrorists'. Ongoing search operations aim to locate remaining assailants, utilizing both ground and air support.

The incident underscores the heightened volatility in a region plagued by jihadi insurgencies. Recent military coups prompted the expulsion of French forces and a pivot to Russian mercenaries. The ruling juntas of Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali have since formed the Alliance of Sahel States to address the mounting security crisis.
