Mookerjee famously opposed Jammu and Kashmir's special status and died in 1953 under unclear circumstances while in custody. Nadda recalled Mookerjee's protest against the region's separate Constitution, flag, and prime minister, which led to his resignation from Nehru's Cabinet.

The BJP leader praised Modi's government for abolishing the state's special status in 2019. Nadda also emphasized Mookerjee's influence in shaping West Bengal, Punjab, and Assam's integration into India, stressing his untimely death should always remind democracy's fragility.
